Clinical trials are testing whether medications that treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can also treat COVID-19, leading some patients with HIV to believe they might be protected against the coronavirus. But a researcher from the MU School of Medicine not only found patients with HIV are susceptible to the virus, she also discovered which factors increased the risk of hospitalization and death.

IAS bids sad farewell to Timothy Ray Brown, the “Berlin patient”
30 September 2020 (Geneva, Switzerland) - It is with a profoundly heavy heart that IAS – the International AIDS Society – today mourns the passing of Timothy Ray Brown, the first person to be cured of HIV.
Known as the “Berlin Patient”, Timothy was cured of HIV in 2008 after undergoing a complex stem cell transplant for lymphoma. For the past six months, Timothy had been living with a recurrence of the leukaemia that had entered his spine and brain. He had remained HIV free.

HIV Drugs Could Prevent Diabetes, Study Suggests
September 23 2020 - A group of drugs used to treat HIV and hepatitis B could be repurposed to prevent type 2 diabetes, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that patients taking the drugs had a 33% lower risk of developing diabetes. The scientists say that the risk reduction makes sense based on how the drugs are known to work, and noted that one of the drugs, lamivudine, improved insulin sensitivity significantly in human cell samples and in a mouse model of diabetes. (In type 2 diabetes, the body loses the ability to use insulin, a hormone, to control blood sugar effectively.)
Study Examines Attitudes Toward Long-Acting Injectable Therapy to Prevent HIV
Sep. 22, 2020 - Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective method of reducing the risk for HIV, yet use of PrEP is uniformly low, especially among women. As a result, researchers have developed long-acting injectable (LAI) versions of PrEP, one version of which was recently shown to be superior to oral PrEP in Phase 3 trials. A new study among women at high risk for HIV explored their hesitancy to use PrEP overall, as well as their interest in and willingness to use LAI PrEP. While one-third of the women interviewed would not consider PrEP regardless of its formulation, when asked to choose, the majority (55%) would prefer LAI PrEP over oral PrEP.

September 18, 2020 - VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) - A Vancouver-based class-action lawsuit involving a breach of privacy for people with HIV has been settled for more than $1 million.
The lawsuit was launched on behalf of 796 members of the Positive Living Society, an agency that offered support to people living with HIV/AIDs.

Increased HIV prevalence in men who buy sex
18 September 2020 - HIV programmes and research have traditionally focused on female sex workers and less often on their male customers. This is partially redressed by a meta-analysis showing that 5% of men who purchase sex in low- and middle-income countries have HIV, a rate which is roughly double that of other men living in the same communities.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a drug regimen recommended for individuals who have engaged in behaviors that place them at elevated risk for HIV. When used consistently, daily oral PrEP has been shown to reduce HIV transmission by 99 percent.
