Feds Enhance Strategy to Vaccinate At-Risk People Against Monkeypox
By Marie Rosenthal, MS
Given the difficulty in identifying the large number of contacts during the current monkeypox outbreak, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that a vaccine will be provided to people with confirmed and presumed monkeypox exposures.
This group includes people who had close physical contact with someone diagnosed with monkeypox, those whose sexual partner was diagnosed with monkeypox, and men who have sex with men who recently had multiple sex partners in a venue where there was known to be monkeypox.
“Today's updated strategy expands our current vaccine efforts, which to date provides vaccines only to those who have monkeypox exposure,” explained Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, the CDC director during a media briefing. “But now we are recommending that vaccines be provided to both people with known monkeypox exposures who are contacted by public health, and also to those people who've been recently exposed to monkeypox that may not be identified through case investigation and contact tracing. For example, those considered most likely to have been exposed to monkeypox include people with close physical contact with someone diagnosed with monkeypox.”
The strategy will vaccinate and protect people at risk for monkeypox, prioritize vaccines for areas with the most cases, and provide guidance to health officials on the front lines to aid their planning and response efforts, according to the HHS.
As of June 28, there are 306 confirmed cases of monkeypox across 28 U.S. states and territories, and more than 4,700 cases of monkeypox have been detected in 49 countries, according to Dr. Walensky.
