ETHICAL BOUNDARIES IN PANDEMIC CONTROL’ OPENING THEME AT ESCAIDE 2022
Stockholm, 23/11/2022: Today marks the opening of the European Scientific Conference on Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology (ESCAIDE) 2022 conference - the leading conference in Europe aimed at strengthening the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
Organised by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), plenaries and sessions will focus on issues shaping infectious disease epidemiology & microbiology in the next decade and beyond, with a special focus on the latest research concerning COVID-19, food-and waterborne diseases, HIV and sexually transmitted infections, vaccine-preventable diseases, influenza and respiratory viruses, antimicrobial resistance and emerging diseases.
“I am particularly delighted to be chairing the ESCAIDE opening session on ethical boundaries in controlling a pandemic” said ECDC Director Andrea Ammon. “Ethical dilemmas should be considered from the start of a health emergency and need to be integrated into the preparedness planning. In dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, national governments were faced with making complex policy decisions for the good of public health. However, a better shared understanding of public health ethics and reflections on how to include public health ethics in future preparedness plans needs to be considered.”
Key speakers at ESCAIDE 2022 include Alena Buyx (Chair of the German Ethics Council), Paul Spiegel (Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health), Fernando Simon (Director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies of the Spanish Ministry of Health), along many other scientists and public health experts in cross-cutting fields, brought together to discuss public health challenges and scientific advances.
ESCAIDE is a hybrid event which takes place between 23-25 November 2022 in Stockholm and also online for those unable to attend in person.
