PARLIAMENT HOUSE EVENT TO HONOUR HIV LONG TERM SURVIVORS
June 21, 2023 - Media Release - Positive Lives Tasmania (PLT)
Positive Lives Tasmania (PLT) wishes to alert you to the HIV Long Term Survivor Awareness event on 22 of June at 1 pm. This will be the first time such an event is held in Tasmania.
PLT is a peer-driven community organisation and peak body of all people living with HIV in Tasmania. We provide support and advocacy to those with HIV.
HIV Long-Term Survivor Awareness Day (HLTSAD), is an international annual event to celebrate and honour people living longest with HIV/AIDS. The day highlights long-term survivors of the epidemic and raises awareness of their needs, issues and journeys.
The HIV epidemic was identified in 1981 and caused very large loss of life particularly in the gay community. Today HIV appears across all population types and is largely treatable but to this day HIV still has no cure and no vaccine.
PLT believes that while AIDS awareness through World AIDS Day still has significance, it is essential we acknowledge those that have experienced this pandemic from the beginning.
It is an opportunity to highlight the unique role of HIV Long-Term Survivors (HLTS) in the AIDS epidemic. And to raise awareness about the challenges and resilience of individuals who were on the frontlines of the early epidemic. Now they are the first generation aging with HIV. Over half of all people living with HIV are over age 50. Estimates are that 25% of people with the virus have had it since 1996 and earlier when HIV was a terminal diagnosis.
It is our responsibility to ensure these survivors and older adults have access to physical and mental health care, medication, food, and housing and social support.
The event will feature interstate and local speakers including those with lived experience.
