Housing is the Vision Summit Tackles Atlanta’s Dual Crises: Housing Instability and HIV/AIDS

Empowering Communities with Resources and Advocacy for Affordable Housing Solutions

October 25, 2024

ATLANTA--()--On October 11th, 2024, the Housing is the Vision Summit convened at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights to address two of Metro Atlanta’s most pressing crises: affordable housing and HIV/AIDS. Hosted by Status: Home, Atlanta’s largest provider of permanent supportive housing for individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS, the summit brought together over 100 community members, advocates, and housing experts to explore solutions to housing instability for vulnerable populations.

“This summit provided much-needed resources and fostered meaningful discussions about how our community can work together to ensure safe, affordable housing for everyone.”

The summit featured dynamic panel discussions on four critical areas:

  • Emergency Housing Options: Providing immediate housing solutions and eviction prevention strategies.
  • Navigating Rental Assistance: Addressing the barriers to accessing rental assistance and discussing innovative support systems.
  • Pathways to Homeownership: Sharing strategies for transitioning from renting to homeownership and making affordable housing accessible.
  • Advocacy for Housing Rights: Empowering communities to use grassroots efforts to drive housing policy change and secure housing rights for individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Led by the Housing in Vision Leadership Council, a group of PLWHA who have personally experienced housing instability, the summit provided practical resources and actionable insights to all attendees. Participants were also given a comprehensive Housing Toolkit filled with information on housing support services, rental assistance programs, homeownership resources, and advocacy groups.

“We cannot and will not end the HIV/AIDS epidemic without addressing housing instability,” said Maryum Phillips, President and CEO of Status: Home. “This summit provided much-needed resources and fostered meaningful discussions about how our community can work together to ensure safe, affordable housing for everyone.”

In addition to panel discussions, attendees had the opportunity to connect with key service providers, including AID Atlanta, NAESM, and Self-Help Credit Union. The event also featured breakfast, lunch, welcome bags, and gift cards for the first 100 attendees.
