Attacks on HIV Programs Hurt Young People

03.19.2025 —The Trump Administration is expected to drastically cut and possibly eliminate HIV programs and funding at CDC, including in the Division of HIV Prevention (DHP).

In response, Debra Hauser, President of the national youth reproductive and sexual health organization Advocates for Youth, issued the following statement:

“With this attack on federal HIV programs, the Trump Administration puts countless lives at risk and exacerbates existing and inequitable barriers to HIV treatment, prevention, and care. It also means losing millions in funding for PrEP (a medication to prevent HIV).

The CDC’s Division of HIV Prevention plays a critical role in stemming the spread of HIV through testing, detection, and response to outbreaks, and in ensuring that people living with HIV receive information and support. Eliminating these services is cruel, dangerous, and will disproportionately impact young people of color who already face stigma and higher barriers to health care.

For decades, we have worked alongside young people, HIV advocates and policymakers to create innovative programs to end the HIV epidemic. Young people have long been at the forefront of the movement for equity and access in HIV care, and deserve leaders who will advocate for their access to prevention, education, treatment, and culturally inclusive HIV services. Congress must step up to protect federal HIV programs.”
