Elon Cares benefit cabaret to raise money in fight against AIDS

By Michaela Zeno | January 14, 2025

An annual fundraiser co-hosted by students in the Department of Performing Arts and Elon University’s Gender & LGBTQIA Center will take place Jan. 15.

Students in the Department of Performing Arts will entertain audiences and raffle prizes this week in support of a national nonprofit that helps people secure health care, counseling, and financial assistance in their battles against HIV/AIDS.

In partnership with the university’s Gender & LGBTQIA Center, the Elon Cares benefit cabaret will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Yeager Recital Hall, in the Center for the Arts.

The performance supports Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations.

Prizes from previous years have included tickets to see Broadway shows, signed Broadway playbills and posters, and one-on-one online coaching sessions with alumni.

“Elon Cares is such an incredible opportunity for students to present innovative ideas, collaborate with their creative peers and put on an incredible performance to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS,” said Ella Huestis ’25, a music theatre major from Dallas, Texas. “It’s a great way to get involved on campus and is always such a fulfilling process.”

The annual student-led program has taken place for nearly two decades and in recent years, performing arts students have partnered with the Gender & LGBTQIA Center to magnify their success. More than $2,000 was raised in both 2023 and 2024.

“It’s been a steady event at Elon for over a decade now, but since our partnership with the GLC, we have only seen it blossom,” said Derick Donato Roberto ’25, a musical theatre major born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York.

For more information about the event, visit www.elon.edu/glc/eloncares. Each donation comes with an entry into a raffle for various prizes. Prizes from previous years can also be viewed on the same website as event information.

Donations by cash or check will be collected at the performances. Online donations can be made by viewing the event homepage. Visit broadwaycares.org for more information about Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
