PAHO Urges Americas Region to Increase Measles Response

To curb transmission of measles and protect vulnerable groups, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an epidemiological alert for the Region of the Americas, urging nations to increase surveillance, vaccination, and swift outbreak response activities.
“The latest measles PAHO warning is absolutely appropriate, given that the U.S., Central and South America, especially Mexico, and Canada all are experiencing significant measles outbreaks,” Tina Q. Tan, MD, the immediate past president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, told Infectious Disease Special Edition.
“Mexico and Canada have both already lost their measles elimination status due to the current outbreaks,” said Dr. Tan, an attending physician at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and a professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, also in Chicago.
