Chuck Solomon: Coming of Age is one of the first generation AIDS documentaries. Made in 1986, it was a loving tribute to theatre director Chuck Solomon, who had recently been diagnosed with AIDS as well as losing his brother and lover to the disease. Much of it takes place at his 40th birthday, a gathering of over 200 people who were an integral part of his life, and who as a community could as Chuck said “could celebrate even in the face of horrible things, instead of retreating behind closed doors and drawn shades”. A film by Marc Huestis and Wendy Dallas, the award winning documentary showed in 25 International Film Festivals, including the prestigious Berlin Film Festival, aired on England's Channel 4, Spains TV 3, CBC in Canada, as well as multiple PBS stations in the US.
