RUINS: Chronicle of an HIV Witch Hunt: Screening and Talk with Filmmaker Zoe Mavroudi
Zoe Mavroudi is an award-winning Greek actress, screenwriter, playwright and director. Mavroudi has won best screenplay at the 2013 Berlin Independent Film Festival and best screenplay at the 2012 Evolution International Film Festival in Palma De Mallorca, Spain, among other honours. Mavroudi has directed a new feature-length documentary, with the help of citizen journalists, entitled Ruins: Chronicle of an HIV Witch-Hunt about HIV criminalization in Greece. In May 2012, the Greek authorities rounded up hundreds of women from the streets of Athens. Those who tested positive for HIV were charged with prostitution and the intent to cause harm, though there was no evidence they were involved in sex work. Their personal information was widely publicized and they were imprisoned. This film is being presented in cooperation with Cinema Politica.
