The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is Canada's
most important national fundraising and awareness event for the community-based AIDS movement. At the end
of 2011, approximately 71,300 people in Canada were living with HIV/AIDS which represents an increase of
7,300 people since 2008. One person every two hours is infected with HIV every single day.
Approximately 3,700 people in Ottawa are living with HIV/AIDS and infection rates
continue to increase. With no cure or vaccine currently available, prevention remains our only hope.
This year, the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life Ottawa will be celebrating 25 years of the annual Walk. The
Walk seeks to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS nationally and raise much-needed funds to support seven
local organizations that provide HIV/AIDS related services in the community.
To celebrate our momentous anniversary, there will be live entertainment, food, a blow up obstacle course
competition, and inflatable jousting, also known as the Gladiator! In addition, we will be holding our 4
th annual Community Fair which brings 25 local organizations and businesses together to provide
samples, information and activities. There will be fun for the whole family including:
painting, games and activities, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones and plenty more.
We are excited about the changes that have been implemented to the walk this year. We have moved from the
traditional evening walk to a day-time, family oriented event. Also, in partnership with the Bank Street
BIA and Morguard, we will be moving the event site to Snider Plaza, 150 Bank St (between Slater St.
and Laurier Ave). We look forward to seeing new and old participants lace up their shoes and
take a stroll through the streets in support of a good cause.
All of the fundraising revenues collected for the AIDS Walk will be used within the community to support
our partner agencies including: Bruce House (lead agency) ( www.brucehouse.org ), AIDS
Committee of Ottawa ( www.aco-cso.ca ), PTS ( www.ptsottawa.org ), Planned Parenthood of
Ottawa ( www.ppottawa.ca ), Snowy Owl AIDS Foundation ( www.snowyowl.org ), Wabano
Centre for Aboriginal Health ( www.wabano.com ) and Youth Services Bureau of
Ottawa ( www.ysb.on.ca ).
The proceeds raised for this fundraising event enable our partner agencies to continue to offer prevention and education programs, as well as treatment, care and support for people living
with and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Ottawa region. In 2013, hundreds of walkers, sponsors and corporate sponsors helped to raise over
$65,000 for these agencies.

Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life
The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is a project of the Canadian AIDS Society in partnership with the British Columbia Persons with
AIDS Society, the AIDS Committee of Toronto, and community-based AIDS organizations across Canada. During the national week-long
event, cities and communities from across the country host Walks to raise funds for local services and programming and to
raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. As Canada's most important HIV/AIDS awareness and fundraising event, the Scotiabank
AIDS Walk for Life has now raised close to $28 million for community-based HIV/AIDS service organizations since
1996 and has attracted over half a million participants.
