NBLCA to Host “State of HIV in Black America” Forums to Highlight the Ongoing HIV/AIDS Public Health Crisis Impacting African Americans
February 4, 2015 - In observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (February 7), an annual
initiative designed to promote HIV/AIDS prevention education and testing among African Americans, the National Black Leadership
Commission on AIDS, Inc. (NBLCA) will host the first in a series of national forums, “State of HIV in Black America,”
on February 6. The forums will focus public attention on the ongoing HIV/AIDS health crisis disproportionately
affecting black communities.
The series of 90-minute forums will launch at New York City's historic Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
Additional forums will follow in Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA, Tampa, FL and Detroit, MI during February and March. NBLCA will
convene expert panelists in public health, policy development, and community advocacy in each city to spur the development
of a national action plan to address the black community's urgent HIV/AIDS education, prevention, testing, and care
needs. Invited audience members will include elected officials, key policy makers, direct service providers,
health practitioners, faith leaders, funders, and community activists.
African Americans account for almost half (44%) of all new HIV infections in the United States. Approximately one in
16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetime, as well as one in 32 black women. NBLCA is committed to the task of
promoting healthy communities. Information regarding the events in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day will
be published to our website.
We need your help reach communities of color and to decrease the risk of new diagnoses and combating this potentially
life threatening disease. You too can make a difference by promoting health in the black community! Here's how – to
