Legendary Human Rights Leader Cleve Jones to Keynote San Antonio AIDS Foundation’s 30th Anniversary Fundraiser

Jul 06, 2016- SAN ANTONIO - Pioneering AIDS and LGBT rights activist and author Cleve Jones will deliver the keynote address at the San Antonio AIDS Foundation (SAAF)'s 30th anniversary fundraiser on Sunday, August 7, at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa.
The event, “First in Hope, First in Service,” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include a brunch buffet, silent and live auctions, and commemorative presentations from elected officials and community leaders who support SAAF's work in South Texas. All proceeds will benefit SAAF, which has been serving San Antonio since 1986, providing compassionate medical care and social services to people living with HIV/AIDS and helping prevent the spread of HIV through education, counseling and testing.
“We are deeply honored that Mr. Jones has agreed to be our keynote speaker,” said SAAF CEO Cynthia Nelson. “His work to fight HIV and AIDS, to end stigma and to demand equal rights for LGBT people is legendary. We are proud that he will share his experiences with us as we continue our own fight against HIV and AIDS here in San Antonio.”
An LGBT activist since the early 1970s, Jones worked with the late Harvey Milk a visionary human rights leader and one of the country's first openly gay elected officials. In 1982, Jones co-founded what became the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. In 1987, he founded The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, to date commemorating more than 48,000 people who have died of AIDS.
HarperCollins published his New York Times best-selling memoir, “Stitching a Revolution,” in 2000. He was portrayed by actor Emile Hirsch in director Gus Van Sant's Oscar-winning film, “MILK,” and served as historical consultant for the production. Jones led the 2009 National Equality March in Washington D.C. and serves on the advisory board of the American Foundation for Equal Rights. His newest book, “When We Rise: Coming of Age in San Francisco, AIDS and My Life in the Movement," will be published Nov. 29 by Hachette Book Group.
