Age Doesn’t Prevent HIV: Today is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day

By: HIV.gov | Published: September 18, 2020

Today, September 18th, is the 13th annual observance of National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAD).

The HIV community today stops to mark this observance and share the message that age is not a form of HIV prevention.

But for older people living with HIV, getting appropriate care and treatment can protect your health and extend your life for many years to come.

As we work to implement the Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America initiative, meeting the needs of those who are aging with HIV is an important objective. Today we invite our readers to share the facts about HIV and aging and this observance:

  • In 2018, 51% of people living with diagnosed HIV in the U.S. were 50 or older.
  • Nearly 17% of people who were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2018 were 50 or older.

Theme: "Aging is a part of life; HIV doesn't have to be!"

Hashtag: #NHAAD
