U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief Gives Opportunities for Local Organizations to Contribute to National HIV Epidemic Control

Dar es Salaam, TANZANIA. 15 October, 2020 - At a ceremony at the U.S. Ambassador residence in Dar es Salaam on October 15, 2020, United States Ambassador Dr. Donald J. Wright awarded grants from the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief (AFHR) to 13 registered civil society, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations from across Tanzania to implement projects that address HIV in the country.
Funding for the grants comes from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which represents the U.S. Government’s commitment to confront the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It remains the single largest effort by any country in the world to combat a single disease. Since PEPFAR’s inception in 2003, the U.S. Government has contributed more than $4.6 million to address HIV in Tanzania alone.
PrEP is a once-daily medication for people without HIV that is a widely accepted method of preventing HIV transmission, but less than 10% of the more than 1 million people vulnerable to HIV are taking PrEP, according to the study.
Grant recipients responded to an open call for proposals to address issues related to HIV/AIDS in their local communities. Proposed projects addressed improving understanding of HIV and strengthening access to services among people living with HIV, orphans and vulnerable children, key and vulnerable populations, men and young men, and adolescent girls and young women.
The winning projects focus on key strategic priorities including improved treatment literacy among people living with HIV; reduction of stigma and discrimination; innovative solutions to reduce gender-based violence (GBV) and access GBV services; reaching men with HIV testing and linkage to treatment; and improved quality of HIV services through community-led monitoring.
The Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief (AFHR) started in 2009 and has provided grants to more than 130community-based and nonprofit organizations in Tanzania. The United States is proud to continue the strong tradition of partnering with these organizations in pursuit of Tanzania’s HIV epidemic control goals.
The 2020 Ambassador's Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief (AFHR) awardees:
- BAKWATA National HIV/AIDS Program will address barriers to client retention on ARVs by leveraging networks of PLHIV through peer educators in collaboration with health care providers in Uvinza District, Kigoma region
- Chimaba Sanaa will strengthen ART treatment literacy and sustaining ART up-taking for the HIV+ men, young males and their sexual partners in Mbarali district, Mbeya region.
- Development for All (DEFOA) will improve the quality of services for people living with HIV accessing ARVs at health facilities through Community health workers and PLHIV beneficiaries.
- Foster Community Creative Solutions (FCCS) will provide awareness about importance of testing; ART treatment and usage of TLD among small holder farmers groups including pastoralists and improve Community Health Workers (CHWs) ART treatment skills in Bahi district council.
- Katandala HIV/AIDS Free Club (KFC) will monitor to improve the quality of service for people living with HIV accessing ARVs in Usevya Health Centre through community score card approach.
- Kilio cha Waathirika na wathiriwa UKIMWI Tanzania (KIWWAUTA) will reduce risk of new HIV infection to key population.
- Participatory Development Concern (PADECO) will monitor to improve the quality of services for people living with HIV accessing ARVs at health facilities through community scorecard approach
- Social Action Trust fund (SATF) will transform the wellbeing of orphans & vulnerable children and their caregivers and facilitate access to quality services with resilience through capacity building and advocacy.
- SUMVE Designated District Hospital will provide HIV/AIDS education on ART treatment, TLD usage and safe sex practice to young people age 15 – 24 in local schools, health centers and community at large.
- Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) will improve access to GBV Services for Community and facility-based prevention, treatment, and health promotion interventions in Mkuranga District, Pwani.
- Umbrella of Women and Disabled Organization (UWODO) will enhance the access to HIV Testing and ensuring linkage to retention in care and treatment literacy for women, girls and people with disabilities in Makambako urban district.
- Tanzania Youth Behavior Change Organisation (TAYOBECO) will create awareness of the transition to TLD as the primary first line therapy and treatment literacy knowledge based on current ART service guideline to key population in 5 Districts of Dar es salaam region.
