Dr Julio Montaner named as new President of International AIDS Society as the XVII International AIDS Conference closes in Mexico. Dr Elly Katabira from Uganda becomes the new President-Elect, the first African to hold the position.
Mexico City, Mexico, Friday, August 8, 2008 The International AIDS Society (IAS), principle organizer of the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, today announced Dr Julio Montaner, Director of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS in Canada, as its new President for the next two years. Montaner takes over from outgoing President, Dr Pedro Cahn.
The new President- Elect is Dr Elly Katabira, Associate Professor of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at Makerere University in Uganda. Katabira becomes the first ever African representative to hold the position.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr Julio Montaner in 2005 became Director of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, a programme at St Paul´s Hospital at Providence Healthcare, after serving as the Centre's Director of Clinical Activities since 1992. He has been a member of the IAS since 1988, an elected IAS Governing Council member representing the North American region since 2002, and IAS President-Elect since 2006. Dr Montaner has authored over 300 scientific publications on HIV/AIDS. He holds the Endowed Chair in AIDS Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He is also the Director of the AIDS Research Programme and Immunodeficiency at St Paul's Hospital.
In addition to his work at SPH/UBC, Dr Montaner was an AIDS National Health Research Scholar from 1987 to 1997. He has been involved in the organization of several national and international HIV/AIDS conferences and is founding Co-Director of the Canadian HIV Trials Network. Dr Montaner received his MD at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1981, he joined the University of British Columbia as a post-doctoral fellow, completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine and was Chief Resident for the Department of Medicine in 1986/1987.
Dr Elly Katabira has worked extensively in the field of care and support for people living with HIV since 1985. He is the Clinical Advisor at the AIDS Clinic in Mulago Hospital and at the Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University Medical School in Uganda. In 1990 he was recognized as a World AIDS Foundation International Scholar. Dr Katabira's research interests include clinical trials and operational research issues on various aspects of HIV/AIDS care and support delivery, both within institutions and at community level.
Dr Katabira has consulted on HIV/AIDS care and support issues for UNAIDS and WHO, as well as for Family Health International. He is co-founder of The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) and is their medical advisor. Dr Katabira has authored more than 150 scientific articles and abstracts.
Katabira will assume the Presidency of the International AIDS Society on the closing day of the XVIII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) to be held July 18 to 23 in Vienna, Austria.

El Dr. Julio Montaner fue nombrado Nuevo Presidente de la Sociedad Internacional de SIDA cuando concluye la XVII Conferencia Internacional sobre el SIDA en México. El Dr. Elly Katabira de Uganda será el nuevo Presidente Electo, el primer africano en ocupar el cargo.
Ciudad de México, viernes 8 de agosto de 2008 - La Sociedad Internacional de SIDA (IAS), principal organizador de la XVII Conferencia Internacional sobre el SIDA en la Ciudad de México, anunció hoy que el Dr. Julio Montaner, Director del Centro BC para la Excelencia en VIH/SIDA en Canadá, será su nuevo Presidente durante los próximos dos años. Montaner sucederá al Presidente saliente, Dr. Pedro Cahn.
El nuevo Presidente Electo es el Dr. Elly Katabira, Profesor Asociado de la Facultad de Medicina en la Universidad de Makerere en Uganda. Katabira se convierte así en el primer representante africano en ocupar este cargo.
Nacido en Buenos Aires, Argentina, el Dr. Julio Montaner fue nombrado en 2005 Director de Actividades Clínicas del Centro BC para la Excelencia en VIH/SIDA en Canadá, un programa del Hospital de St. Paul en Providence Healthcare, después de fungir como Director del Centro de Actividades Clínicas desde 1992. Ha sido miembro de la IAS desde 1988, miembro electo del Consejo de Gobierno de la IAS representando a la región del Norte América desde 2002, y es el Presidente Electo de la IAS desde 2006. El Dr. Montaner ha escrito más de 300 artículos científicos sobre VIH/SIDA. Es Presidente Honorario de Investigación sobre SIDA en la Universidad de British Columbia (UBC). También es Director del Programa de Investigación sobre SIDA e Inmunodeficiencia en el Hospital de St. Paul.
Además de su trabajo como SPH/UBC, el Dr. Montaner fue Académico de Investigación Nacional de Salud contra el SIDA de 1987 a 1997. Ha estado involucrado en la organización de diversas conferencias nacionales e internacionales sobre VIH/SIDA y es Codirector fundador de la Red de Ensayos de VIH en Canadá. El Dr. Montaner recibió su Doctorado en Medicina en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. En 1981, ingresó a la Universidad de British Colombia como candidato al post-doctorado, completó la residencia en Medicina Interna y Medicina Respiratoria y fue Residente en Jefe del Departamento de Medicina en 1986/1987.
El Dr. Elly Katabira ha trabajado exhaustivamente desde 1985 en el área de cuidado y apoyo para personas que viven con VIH. Es el asesor principal de la clínica de SIDA del Hospital de Mulago y del Instituto de Enfermedades Infecciosas de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Makerere. En 1990 se le reconoció como Especialista Internacional de la Fundación Mundial contra el SIDA. El principal interés de investigación del Dr. Katabira incluye ensayos clínicos y las cuestiones operativas relacionadas con la investigación de diversos aspectos de la provisión de cuidado y apoyo del VIH, tanto a nivel institucional como comunitario
El Dr. Katabira ha asesorado a OUNISIDA, la OMS y la Family Health International sobre cuestiones de apoyo y cuidado en relación al VIH/SIDA. Es cofundador y asesor médico de la Organización de Apoyo a la respuesta frente al SIDA. El Dr. Katabira ha escrito más de 150 artículos y resúmenes científicos.
Katabira asumirá el cargo de Presidente de la Sociedad Internacional de SIDA el día de la clausura de la XVIII Conferencia Internacional sobre SIDA (AIDS 2010), la cual se llevará a cabo del 18 al 23 de julio en Viena, Austria.
