Media announcement: LIVING2012: The Positive Leadership Summit Washington DC, 19-20 July 2012

10 July 2012 - Amsterdam - Immediately prior to AIDS 2012, the 19th International AIDS Conference, over 300 people living with HIV from communities and organizations across the globe, will be gathering in Washington DC for LIVING 2012: The Positive Leadership Summit. This Summit is an event organized for and by people living with HIV.

LIVING 2012 is part of an inclusive global consultative process led by people living with HIV under the umbrella of Positive Health, Dignity and Prevention. LIVING 2012 will be instrumental in providing direction to the advocacy and policy positions that will re-define the Global Advocacy Agenda for people living with HIV in response to the changing epidemic.

The main discussion areas of the LIVING 2012 programme are:

Access to a comprehensive range of Treatment, Prevention, Care and Support services is critical to the health and general well being of people living with HIV. How can these services be made better and more accessible for more people?

People living with HIV are regularly confronted by stigma, discrimination and other human rights violations. These violations hinder the HIV response, including the access to treatment and preventions services. How can laws and policies be utilized to protect and promote the human rights of all people living with HIV, enabling lives free from stigma and discrimination?

The role of people living with HIV has been critical to the progress made in the HIV response to date. How can the global community of people living with HIV maintain and increase its effectiveness and its ability to mobilize and respond to the most pressing current needs.

LIVING 2012 will prepare delegates living with HIV to carry the messages from the Summit into AIDS 2012, as well as back to their constituencies, communities, and organisations; creating a unified voice for advocacy on key advocacy areas for people living with HIV at all levels of the response.

A special satellite to present outcomes and recommendations identified at LIVING 2012 will take place on Monday July 23, 18:30-20:30, MR2, Washington Convention Center.

Media is welcome to attend the closing press conference on July 20, at 17.30. LIVING 2012 will take place at FHI360 Conference Centre, 1825 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20009 USA. Please RSVP with media liaison Manuel da Quinta at daquintam@unaids.org.
