Landmark HIV/AIDS Publication Documents Lessons Learned in Global HIV/AIDS Efforts
"From the Ground Up: Building Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care Programs in Resource-Limited Settings" Features Work of Top Global Health Experts
3/23/2010 - Washington, D.C. - The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is pleased to make
available free-of-charge, in print and on CD-Rom, a comprehensive guide to improving and expanding HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment efforts in
resource-limited settings. Dr. Richard Marlink, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation's Senior Advisor for Medical and Scientific Affairs
and Professor of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, led the development of this groundbreaking resource, with support from
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "A Day in the Life of Africa" AIDS Education Fund, Harvard University, and others.
A review published in the March 20, 2010, issue of The Lancet, says the three-volume publication is "unique in imparting concern and compassion for those
affected by HIV/AIDS, alongside invaluable science, statistics, and policy issues relating to this pandemic." From the Ground Up contains practical guidance targeted
toward health care providers, managers, policy makers, and implementers, as well as the academic community.
"This guide distills experiences over the past two decades from a wide range of international HIV/AIDS efforts, with a special focus on
sub-Saharan Africa," said Dr. Marlink. "This documentation of lessons learned, in addition to the latest knowledge concerning the evolving 'science' of
implementing HIV care programs in resource-limited settings, is critically important."
More than 320 authors from many of the world's leading public health institutions contributed to the text, sharing their first-hand experiences
and recommendations for the benefit of the international HIV/AIDS community. All chapters are presented in a practical and accessible format, providing a comprehensive
summary of crucial considerations for international HIV/AIDS programs in the 21st century.

From the Ground Up presents a comprehensive and practical approach to implementing international HIV/AIDS programs: building a strong foundation, establishing a framework
for success, and developing pathways and partnerships. Throughout the publication are profiles of leaders working on the front lines of the AIDS pandemic, written by
award-winning journalist John Donnelly, with photographs taken by award-winning photojournalist Dominic Chavez.
The print and CD-Rom versions are available free-of-charge and can be ordered at http://ftgu.pedaids.org. Given the dynamic nature of the global health field, a web-based
version of the publication is currently being developed, and a Beta version will be launched during the 2010 International AIDS Society Conference in Vienna, Austria.
Proposed components of the digital platform include: open access to the updated full text of all content from the print publication, regularly updated and
annotated resource pages by topic, areas for user-generated content and tools, secure discussion boards, social networking for linking like-minded professionals, RSS
news feeds, control panels for author content updates, hosted "ask the expert" Q&A forums, user blogs, as well as other interactive components.
